Reviewerへの対応
Reviewが返ってきたら
まずはrejectで無いかどうか確認しましょう。もしrejectでなければとりあえずは「やった！」ですね。Editor kickと言って、reviewにも回されずにrejectされる場合があります。これは「reviewerに回すまでもない」と見なされた場合です（がーん）。一週間ほどしても特に返事がなければ外部査読[AH1] に回っていると考えていいでしょう (オンライン投稿のページで確認できます)。
Reviewの内容をまずは確認しましょう。
・ Accept with minor revision
・ Accept with major revision
・ Major revision and resubmission
・ Reject
大体は上記のどれかです。雑誌によってはどれか分かりづらいのもありますが、小さな修正のみでacceptされるものと大きな修正でaccept、そして修正して再度投稿可能のパターンです。
勘違いしてはいけないのですが、一番大事なのはreviewersではなくeditorです。Editorが最終的に採否の判断をするので、決してeditorの機嫌を損ねるような事はしてはいけません。例えreviewerがnoと言ってもeditorの意志でacceptになることもありえます。
- 期限までに返さない
- 査読者のコメントに答えない（くだらないコメントにもきちんと対処する）
- 攻撃的、中傷的な表現をする
- 礼儀がなっていない
などに注意して下さい。Editorも普通の人間ですから。
論文がRejectされたら
Editor’s kickの場合は速やかに次の雑誌に投稿しましょう。結構気が滅入るのと、体裁を変えないといけないので、ついつい面倒くさくなり後回しになりがちですが、待っている時間は無駄なので数日以内に再投稿します。
もしReviewersのコメントがあった場合、自分の研究に役立ちそうだなと思ったところは取り入れます。変えずに投稿する方もいますが、狭い世の中なので、次に出した雑誌でまた同じreviewerに当たる可能性は十分あります。その時に「前もこの論文見たけど、私がコメントしたところが何も変わってない」ってなったら多分またrejectになりますよね（心情的に）。
Editor/Reviewerは「神」である
- Editor/reviewersは（一応）神様である
- 質問の意図を汲んで正確に答える
- 全力を尽くす
さて、rejectされなかったらeditor/reviewersの返事に回答しないといけません。一部の一流誌を除き一般的にreviewerの質は保証されていません（たまにひどい査読者にあたる）。論文の意図を理解していない（これは伝え方に問題のある場合もあります）、研究デザインや統計を分かっていないreviewersに当たることもあります。それでも論文の質の向上に役立つところは取り入れる、役に立たないコメントについては礼儀正しく対応することが必要です。
原則は、
- Responseはreviewersに向けてではなく、editorに向けて書く
- 全ての質問に丁寧に答える
- 書き方はある程度決まっている
- コメントの意図をつかむ（これが結構難しいですが鍵です）
- 論文の弱点は素直に認める
- 必ずしも全てのコメントに従う必要はない（ただし敬意を払って丁寧にその理由を述べること）。しかしやれることはやりましょう。
Reviseは解析のやり直しなど、時に辛い作業です。しかし、「論文作成時の労力はeditorの好みなどで蹴られたりして報われないことも多いが、reviseの労力は報われるから最大限頑張った方がいい」と言う先生もいるように頑張りどころです。ちなみにNew Engl J Med, JAMA, Lancetなど一部の超一流ジャーナルでは外部査読と呼ばれる通常のreviewersに加えて疫学・統計学専門のreviewersが加わることがありますが、これは難敵です。Editorと彼らをいかに説得するかがキーポイントになります。
対応の具体例
基本的に現在完了形で行ったことを書いていきます。Majorコメントに関してはまずwe appreciate / we thankなど謝辞を述べてから自分の意見を書きます。簡単なminorコメントにはas suggestedやas requestedと始まり対応した内容を簡潔に書きます。Editorへのレスポンスなのでeditorのコメントに対しては”you”で返してもいいですが、reviewerのコメントに対しては”the reviewer”と返します。Reviewerのコメントに”you”で返さないようにしましょう。
Reviewerへの返事でやりがちなのが”As suggested, we have revised the manuscript (page **, para **”とだけ書いて終わってしまうことです。でもこれはeditor/reviewerに「言われた通り直しておいたから本文見ておいてね」と投げているようなものなので、彼らに余計な労力を使わせています。ちゃんとどのように変えたのかを具体的に記載しましょう。
1. 返事の書き方（文頭）

However, we do not believe that the readers of *XX Journal are limited to the emergency physicians in US academic centers. The editorial policy of XX Journal states that the Journal is an international journal, and is committed to the publication of research that will be of interest to a broad audience of emergency practitioners, including physicians, nurses and paramedics, within different settings and in different countries. We agree that validations of our results in systems with established emergency medicine training and practice are warranted. However, our findings are consistent with the principle of using early and systematic rescue airway techniques. Therefore, our inferences are clinically plausible and likely applicable to different practice settings.

時として、投稿したものの数ヶ月なしのつぶて…なんていうことがあります。大体3ヶ月たってもなにも返事が無い、あるいは投稿したサイトの進捗状況に変化がない場合は催促してみましょう。

の流れになります。3ヶ月でstep 4ならもう少し待ってもいいかもしれませんが、まだinitial assessment などの場合は忘れ去られている場合もあるので礼儀正しく催促してみましょう。
